NOTICE OF VOLUNTARY PRODUCT RECALL
22 May 2009

The Warehouse today announced the recall of the Wild River Boater’s Emergency Kit, purchased between September 2007, and May 2009.

Barcode Product Description: 9417961913019 Wild River Boater’s Emergency Kit.

It is believed there may be a fault with the kits’ torch batteries; the product is therefore unsafe for its intended purpose – to act as an emergency resource kit for boating. Customers are warned not to use the product.
A spokesman for The Warehouse says the product has been recalled as quickly as possible in light of concerns for customer safety. As soon as it was brought to the attention of staff that there may be faulty torch batteries in the Wild River Boater’s Emergency kits, The Warehouse has acted as quickly to take the product off the shelves, and to book advertisements, asking that people check and return the batteries from the kits before heading out on the water.

All customers will receive a full refund, with or without a receipt as well as the option to receive free replacement batteries, with which the kit is then fully operational. Customers are advised to call 0800 422 274 during business for more information, or to contact their local Warehouse store.

COASTGUARD NOWCASTING PIONEER RECOGNISED AT SEARCH AND RESCUE AWARDS

Coastguard is celebrating the search and rescue sector’s recognition for its NowCasting automated weather system, and the long-serving volunteer behind its success.

Kevin O’Sullivan, an Auckland resident and Coastguard Northern Region Board member and volunteer for over 35 years, received a Certificate of Achievement at the annual NZ Search and Rescue Awards for ‘Innovation in Marine Search and Rescue.’

The award, presented by Transport Minister Steven Joyce, stems from Mr O’Sullivan’s pioneering efforts with the establishment of the NowCasting service which now has 95 per cent coverage around New Zealand.

Coastguard New Zealand CEO Bruce Reid says the NowCasting service broadcasts a continuous wind data and weather forecast providing vital, up-to-the minute safety information for boaties planning to go to sea.

“Tens-of-thousands of Kiwi boaties use the NowCasting service every year and we’re delighted one of our volunteers has been recognised for its development and on-going expansion.

“The NowCasting service is widely acknowledged as one of Coastguard’s most valuable safety services, equipping boat operators with real-time weather information and enabling better decision making at sea, says Reid.”

Since it was first commissioned in the Hauraki Gulf in 1983, the service has grown nationally with a network of 14 automatic weather stations and VHF repeaters positioned around the country.
