The Whangaruru Volunteer Coastguard is a small unit with a large operating area. We conduct search and rescue operations in an area from Cape Brett in the north, east to the Poor Knights islands 20 miles offshore, and down to Whananaki in the south. This provides seamless SAR coverage in conjunction with the Tutukaka and Bay of Islands Coastguard units. An ongoing challenge for the unit is finding enough locals to crew the boat, and we welcome all enquires from interested volunteers.
The major event of the year for the unit is a Rescue Day held every other Labour Weekend. Rescue Day involves many other northern region Coastguard units, some who trailer their boats from the Hokianga, as well as airborne units in some years. The event brings out a real community spirit, and the unit is an integral part in that community.
Our rescue vessel is named Tangaroa - In mãori mythology, Tangaroa is one of the great gods, the god of the sea - and is named in honour of several local men who's loss of life at sea was the catalyst for forming a local Coastguard unit to serve the Whangaruru area. Tangaroa is a 6.8m Naiad design, Circa constructed, rigid inflatable boat with twin 115hp Yamaha outboard engines.
