Its a bathtub Jim but not as we know it.
Visitors to the Coastguard stand at the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show held in Auckland in May could be forgiven for looking twice, when they realised that rather than seeing the latest in Coastguard Rescue Vessels (well actually the latest Coastguard Rescue Vessel was there with Coastguard Papakura’s brand new 9.0 metre Naiad), they were actually looking at an Englefield “Sorrento” bathtub.
The strange craft is purpose designed as a “Crowd Pleaser” to promote the inaugural Englefield Bathtub Derby which is going to be held at Takapuna Beach on Auckland’s North Shore in November. As well as providing Coastguard Rescue vessels as safety boats for the day, all entry fees for the event will be going to Coastguard. Keep an eye out as there is also likely to be some Coastguard entries as well.
Each entry is given an Englefield Sorrento bathtub from which they can build and race in either the motor, sail, pedal or paddle categories and be in to win the supreme race day travel prize to the World Championship Bathtub Race and Nanaimo Marine Festival in Canada valued at $6500.
Already the combination of that great kiwi ingenuity and our strong maritime spirit is showing with some extremely interesting entries coming forward for what is going to be a seriously fun fundraiser.
