Whangaruru

The Whangaruru Volunteer Coastguard Inc is a small unit with a large area.  It goes from Whananaki in the South, to Cape Brett in the North.  This provides seamless coverage in conjunction with the Tutukaka and Bay of Islands Coastguard units.  The downside of covering such a spread out community is finding enough locals to crew the boat, and this is an ongoing problem for the unit.

The major events of the year for the unit are the Bland Bay Fishing Carnival at Easter, and the Rescue Day Demonstration held on Labour Weekend.  The Fishing Carnival involves two days out on the water, assisting with the competition and handing out around 400 Easter Eggs.  The Rescue Day involves about 5 other Coastguard units, some who trailer their boats from the Hokianga, as well as the NEST Rescue Helicopter.  These two events bring out a real community spirit in the locals, and the unit is an integral part in that community.
