Raglan

Raglan Volunteer Coastguard delivers SAR and breakdown assistance to recreational and commercial mariners on the west coast of the North Island. Our area stretches from Crayfish Point (north) to Tirua Point (south).

The unit functions thanks to a steadfast dedication and commitment from local volunteers. Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and offer wide-ranging skills in seamanship, operations, communications, and administration and governance.

We operate two rescue vessels out of Raglan:

Harbour View Rescue ZMQ9006
Generously supported by Raglan Harbour View Hotel
  • 11 metre Scott Robson designed aluminium catamaran
  • Twin 350hp Yanmar diesel engines, with twin Hamilton jet units
  • Range 200NM
  • Provides stability during patient transfer and transit
  • Suitable for large tows
  • Observers platform during search task
  • Capable of providing on-scene coordination
Raglan Ski Rescue 2 ZMQ9002
Generously supported by The Perry Foundation
  • Yamaha FX160 Cruiser
  • Range  up to 2NM from shore
  • First response vessel used for scene assessment and primary treatment
  • Ideal manoeuvrability and quick response in breaker zone, and during patient transfers
  • Provides on-the-water search capability close in-shore

Raglan Volunteer Coastguard works in varying sea conditions – sometimes extreme – and cater to a mixed client base including surfers, kitesurfers, paddlers, et al. Due to the diversity of our service physical propensity, determination, and resilience are fundamental to the kit our crews carry.

Crew roles include communications, vessel (wet) operations, shore-based, medical, and rescue swimmers and observers for air assets. Trainings take place each Wednesday throughout the year, commencing 1730hrs at base. An annual SAREX challenging local assets and capability takes place each December.
