Ocean Yachtmaster

 

An advanced course covering ocean navigation and passage making, for skippers and crew intending to race offshore or cruise to overseas destinations.

Aim: To gain advanced ocean navigation and passage making knowledge.
Duration: 72 Hours.
Qualification: NZ Ocean Yachtmaster Certificate.
Prerequisites: Current First Aid, MROC & NZ Coastal Skipper Certificates, 400 hours proven sea-time, with 50 hours beyond harbour limits and at least 72 hours continuous time at least 30 miles off-shore.

1. Ocean Navigation

  • The earth & the celestial sphere

  • The PZX triangle

  • The sextant

  • Measurement of time

  • Meridian altitudes

  • Sun, star, & other sights

  • Compass checking

  • Satellite navigation systems

  • Great circle sailing

  • Meteorology

  • Passage planning

  • Communications

2. Oral Testing

  • Sextant use  & errors

  • Seamanship & safety

  • Stability

  • Heavy weather handling

  • Passage making

  • Master's responsibilities

  • Legal knowledge

Price:   $340.00 course fee. An additional exam fee (to be paid during the course) of $220 is payable.
