Manukau

Manukau Volunteer Coastguard became operational in 1969 in response to the need for more rescue resources in the Manuaku Harbour, working alongside Papakura Coastguard.  Manukau's first vessel was "Waste Management" with the callsign ZMWM which has been kept and is still in use today on their current vessel, Manukau Rescue One.  The unit originally set up their base at French Bay on the northern side of the Manukau Harbour and this has proven to be a good location, providing quick response times for both the Manukau Bar and up to Onehunga. The unit currently have 30 active crew who are all on pager call-out, expected to respond 24/7 in all weather conditions.  They also have 2 qualified Incident Controllers who add a lot to the unit with local knowledge and incident management skills.
