The Howick Volunteer Coastguard was established in 1956 after the drowning of three local youths. It was originally started and manned by members of the Howick Fire Brigade and has been in continuous service ever since. It now consists of around 40 members who are all operational crew and live relatively close to the Headquarters at Howick Beach.
Crews turn out to an average of 100 incidents per year and all personnel are on pager call-out 24/7. Howick operate two vessels, Howick Rescue 1, a 9.5 m jet propelled Naiad (pictured below), and Howick Rescue 2, a 5.5 m Naiad for use on local jobs when HR1 is unavailable.
