The mission of the Auckland Coastguard Air Patrol is to provide aerial search and observation support to Coastguard units in the greater Auckland region. The Coastguard aircraft is used to patrol areas including the Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel, Kawau Island, Bream Head, Kaipara Harbour, Raglan, Kawhia and elsewhere if a local resource is not available for an emergency.

ZK-SAR is a Cessna 182, owned by Coastguard Northern Region and is located at Ardmore airfield. The aircrew is made up of volunteers who are rostered on weekend and public holiday shifts. A flying exercise is included on each shift.
